Introduction to Skiing is designed for complete beginners aged 10+ or those returning to skiing after a long period of time (30+ years). Ski equipment and techniques have continued to develop over the years, so a significant break from skiing may mean you need to relearn the basics. Even if you have skied before, this may still be the most suitable starting point.
This is a group lesson where you will be learning alongside others at the same stage, with the instructor guiding the group through each part of the session.
The session focuses on learning how to move and control your skis safely on both flat ground and the slope.
You will begin by learning how to move around on skis, including balance and basic movement on flat ground, before progressing onto the slope.
From there, you will practise straight runs to build balance and learn how to centre yourself on the skis, which begins the development of control. As balance and centring improve, you will be introduced to the snowplough position, which is used to control speed and forms the foundation for stopping and turning.
The session is active and can be physically demanding, particularly for first-time skiers. Repetition is used throughout to build confidence, control, and consistency.
Please arrive 30 minutes before your lesson time to allow for sign-in and equipment fitting.
Ski and boot fitting takes place before the lesson begins and is not included within the lesson time.
The 1-hour lesson refers to on-slope instruction only.
The session typically begins on flat ground before progressing onto the slope as confidence builds.
All participants in this lesson will be beginners and will progress through the session together at a steady pace.
Participants should wear suitable clothing, including long sleeves, long trousers, and gloves.
Standard ski gloves are not recommended, as they can become very hot and uncomfortable in typical UK conditions.
Helmets and boots are provided, but you are welcome to use your own if preferred.
The slope is mist-lubricated, so participants may get wet. A change of clothes is recommended.
After completing Introduction to Skiing, you will be ready to progress to Level 2, where you will begin developing greater control using a snowplough and managing speed more consistently.
