Tribute

Knockhatch Ski & Snowboard School welcomes thousands of skiers, snowboarders, schools, Scouts, Guides, families and community groups every year. For many, it's where they first discover a lifelong love of Snowsports.

But long before there was a ski slope, there was simply an idea.

Knockhatch began life as a working dairy farm before Annette Jaggers transformed it into the family-run Adventure Park. She wanted to create somewhere families could spend time together, enjoy new experiences and make lasting memories.

Annette believed in creating opportunities—not for herself, but for her family.

She wanted them to have opportunities that simply hadn't been possible for her, and she dreamed of building a place where those opportunities could one day be shared with others.

As a young boy, Steven dreamed of learning to ski, but the opportunity simply wasn't there.

Annette didn't just want opportunities for her own family. She wanted future generations to have opportunities her family had once only dreamed of.

That belief—that nothing is impossible—remains at the heart of everything we do.

Turning that dream into reality required another extraordinary talent.

Much of what visitors enjoy at Knockhatch exists thanks to Colin, whose remarkable ability to turn ambitious ideas into reality helped shape the Adventure Park.

The ski slope is one of many examples of Colin's remarkable ability to turn ambitious ideas into reality.

There wasn't a hill waiting to have a ski slope built on it.

The hill had to be imagined.

Designed.

Engineered.

Built.

Creating a man-made ski slope from an empty field was an enormous undertaking, but Colin's vision and determination made it possible.

Together, Annette's vision, Steven's passion for skiing and Colin's ability to turn dreams into reality created something truly unique—a family ski school built not simply to teach skiing, but to share the confidence, friendships and enjoyment it can bring.

Everyone who visits us becomes part of the same story that began in a muddy field with a dream and the determination to make it real.

At Knockhatch, skiing has never just been about reaching the bottom of a slope.

It's about building confidence.

Creating memories.

Bringing people together.

And ensuring everyone has the opportunity to discover the joy of skiing.

Adventure Awaits

A Brief History of Skiing

Long before skiing became a sport, it was a means of survival.

For thousands of years, people living in snow-covered landscapes used skis to travel across mountains, frozen lakes and forests. They carried food, visited neighbouring villages, hunted for their families and explored places that would otherwise have been impossible to reach during winter.

For many early communities, skis weren't about recreation.

They were freedom.

As skiing developed, it also found an important place in military history. Soldiers used skis to patrol borders, carry messages and move quickly across snow-covered terrain where horses and wheeled transport simply couldn't go. Entire military units became renowned for their ability to travel silently and efficiently through some of the harshest environments on Earth.

As roads improved and transport evolved, skiing slowly transformed from a practical necessity into a recreational pastime. By the nineteenth century, organised competitions were being held in Norway, where many of the techniques still used today began to develop. Before long, skiing spread across Europe and eventually around the world, becoming one of the most popular winter sports ever created.

That original spirit of exploration has never disappeared.

Although most people now ski for enjoyment rather than necessity, the feeling of standing at the top of a mountain, looking towards somewhere new and knowing you have the freedom to explore it remains one of skiing's greatest attractions.

Perhaps that's why skiing captured Steven's imagination so completely as a young boy. It wasn't simply the sport that fascinated him—it was the adventure. The idea that a pair of skis could carry you across mountains and into places that few people could otherwise reach sparked a fascination that never faded.

At Knockhatch, we hope every beginner experiences a little of that same feeling. Whether it's your very first lesson on a dry slope or your first family ski holiday in the mountains, every journey has to begin somewhere.

Snowboarding – Breaking the Rules

For much of the twentieth century, skiing was often seen as a sport for those fortunate enough to visit the mountains. It carried an image of expensive holidays, exclusive resorts and traditional etiquette. While millions of people loved the sport, it could sometimes appear out of reach for ordinary families.

Then came snowboarding.

Inspired by surfing, skateboarding and a desire to do things differently, snowboarding emerged during the 1960s and 1970s. It didn't follow the traditional rules. It attracted a younger generation, challenged established ideas and brought a completely different culture to the mountains.

Not everyone welcomed it.

Many ski resorts refused to allow snowboarders on their slopes, believing they didn't belong alongside skiers. But the popularity of the sport continued to grow, and eventually the mountains opened their doors.

Snowboarding didn't replace skiing.

It changed it.

The arrival of snowboarders helped make mountain sports feel younger, more relaxed and more accessible. It encouraged a new generation of people to discover the mountains, many of whom might never have considered a traditional ski holiday.

Today, skiing and snowboarding share the same lifts, the same slopes and the same mountains. Each has its own history and culture, but together they have helped make Snowsports more welcoming and accessible than ever before.

At Knockhatch, we believe that is something worth celebrating.

Whether you choose two skis or one board, the important thing is the same as it has always been—getting people onto the slope and helping them discover the enjoyment of snow sports.

We'll never give up on you

Why We Believe Skiing Is More Than Just a Sport

At first glance, skiing is about learning to slide down a hill.

In reality, it becomes so much more.

Every lesson teaches confidence, resilience and determination. Falls become opportunities to get back up. Small achievements become lifelong memories. Complete beginners become confident skiers, and nervous first-timers often leave with a smile they didn't expect.

Skiing has a remarkable way of bringing people together. Families learn side by side, school friends encourage one another, Scouts celebrate every achievement, and complete strangers often finish a lesson feeling like they've known each other for years.

Perhaps most importantly, skiing reminds us that ability should never define opportunity.

Whether someone is three years old or eighty, whether they are able-bodied or adaptive, taking their very first lesson or training to become an instructor, everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the enjoyment, confidence and friendships that skiing can bring.

That belief has shaped Knockhatch from the very beginning, and it continues to guide every lesson we teach.

Because to us...

It's always been more than just a sport.
